1842 Indianola Avenue - Work Session
On Saturday, July 24 a small but enthusiastic group of brothers, alumni and actives, joined forces to give The House on the Hill some breathing room.
In attendance were alumnus Mike Feyh, Gordon Shuler, Larry Schmitz and Walt Shuler. The active chapter was represented by current EC member & GM, Alex Newkold, and brothers Michael Moore, Chris French and Orel De La Mota.
Two teams were formed. The front yard team faced the formidable task of opening up the New/South Wing and patio area, freeing it from overhanging branches and shrub over-growth. They also took down some limbs overhanging the driveway while taking a chainsaw to the refuse. The back parking lot team wrestled with the debris and overgrowth found around and near the dumpster – a gathering place for back-alley “dumpster divers”.
The work took just under three hours to complete under some sweltering conditions. Brothers, young and old, took pride in the final product.

The Kappa Sigma fraternity active chapter will begin the year 2010 – 2011 with a full head of steam. Membership is +75 members with +30 living in “The House on the Hill”. The House Company through outstanding fund management over several years is directing capital improvements to 1842 Indianola Avenue in August/September to include fixing leaks on the two flat roof areas on the 3rd Floor, the replacing of some slate roofing areas along with fixing New/South Wing bathroom areas.
More capital improvements are needed for 1842 Indianola Avenue and may require contributions in the future. If interested in helping either through work session or via contribution, please feel free to seek more information by contacting Mike Feyh (

Recently, five undergraduate brothers of the Alpha-Sigma chapter of Kappa Sigma attended the 2010 Kappa Sigma Grand Conclave in New Orleans, Louisiana. The trip was a huge success, with the Alpha- Sigma chapter coming away with several distinguished awards and honors.
One of the chapter’s main goals and challenges this year was to win the prestigious FACE (Founders' Award of Chapter Excellence) award for the second year in a row. After a year of working to reach this goal, Alpha-Sigma showed they were up to the challenge. They were among only a small number of chapters to win this award.
In addition to the FACE award, Alpha Sigma was able to have two members attain master of the ritual. This is an amazing feat considering the amount of hours of preparation and studying that was put in to accomplish this goal.
Alpha Sigma also took home the award for Outstanding Intramural Program and the Outstanding BIA Program award for pledge education. These two awards are very meaningful because they display brotherhood and the necessity of informing pledges the true meaning of Kappa Sigma.
